About the Booch

Ten years ago, Ian and Liz embarked on a journey to bring a healthier lifestyle choice to non-drinkers and health-conscious individuals. What began as a personal exploration into brewing kombucha at home has blossomed into Cross Culture Kombucha – a brand celebrated for its commitment to providing a delicious, non-alcoholic drink that can be enjoyed socially.

The former website, initially launched without e-commerce functionality, and required a robust and scalable e-commerce platform to align with the rapid growth of Cross Culture Kombucha. The project's primary focus is to create a user-centric e-commerce solution that seamlessly interfaces with QuickBooks Enterprise, ensuring efficient order management, inventory control, and financial integrity.

Target Audience

This redevelopment caters to two primary audiences:

  • Retail Customers (CT and NY)
  • Wholesale Customers (North America)

Key Objectives

  • Implement a non-traditional e-commerce solution that aligns with the unique product delivery and pickup model.
  • Enhance user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) through a comprehensive content audit.
  • Integrate QuickBooks Enterprise for streamlined order and inventory management.
  • Cater to the distinct needs of retail and wholesale customers with tailored catalog views and pricing structures.
  • Optimize website performance, security, and reliability to ensure a seamless user experience.

Collaborative Team

This project was a collaborative effort between Cross Culture Kombucha and Bingley Digital, with Liz Ceppos, Joe Hardiman, and the Cross Culture Kombucha team providing valuable insights and direction. Bingley Digital, led by Lauren White, Rebecca Ashcraft, Jessica Meade, James (Harless) Reid, Vivek Carrasco, and Sergio Stephano, is responsible for the technical execution and creative elements of the redevelopment.

Elevating the brand beyond digital boundaries, I also illustrated custom t-shirt designs that blend comfort with style. These wearables are more than just clothing; they are a wearable expression of the vibrant and health-conscious Cross Culture Kombucha community.

Our design journey extended to crafting impactful one sheets for marketing. These succinct documents serve as powerful communication tools, encapsulating key brand messages, product highlights, and the brand's unwavering commitment to health and sustainability.

With a professionally executed responsive design, the website adapts effortlessly to various devices, providing an optimal viewing and interaction experience. This commitment to mobile responsiveness reflects our dedication to meeting users where they are, allowing customers to explore, engage, and make purchases with ease, whether on a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

The redevelopment of the Cross Culture Kombucha website places a strong emphasis on delivering an exceptional User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX), complemented by a thoughtful design and art direction strategy. We employed some key strategies and processes to ensure a visually engaging and user-friendly digital platform.

  • Conducted thorough user research to understand the preferences, behaviors, and expectations of both retail and wholesale customers.
  • Analyzed existing user data and feedback to identify pain points and areas for improvement.
  • Created detailed user personas representing the diverse customer base, allowing for a more personalized and targeted design approach.
  • Prioritized user needs and preferences in alignment with the unique characteristics of the functional beverage industry.

  • Utilized color schemes, typography, and imagery to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.

Mobile-First Approach

  • Prioritized a mobile-first design approach to cater to the growing number of users accessing the website from mobile devices.
  • Ensured a responsive design that adapts seamlessly to various screen sizes, maintaining functionality and aesthetics.

  • Implemented features and design elements that consider diverse user needs, including those with disabilities.

Wireframing

  • Developed detailed wireframes outlining the structural layout and functionality of the website.
  • Facilitated early-stage feedback and adjustments to ensure alignment with user expectations.
  • Created interactive prototypes to simulate the user journey, allowing for comprehensive testing and validation of design concepts.

Taking the brand on the road, our illustrative prowess extended to a captivating van wrap. Transforming the vehicle into a mobile billboard, the wrap not only communicates the brand's identity but also turns heads on the streets, contributing to increased brand visibility and recognition. And yes, the taps work!

I also created new window clings to adorn both store windows and refrigerator doors. This creative application blends conventional photography, 3D elements, and illustration, creating a vibrant and engaging representation that communicates the brand's essence and captivates the audience.

Embracing Atomic Design

Embracing Atomic Design principles was a pivotal strategy in achieving a consistent and scalable user interface (UI) for Cross Culture Kombucha. The Atomic Design methodology, comprising atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, and pages, served as a systematic framework for breaking down design elements into modular building blocks. The team initiated the process by defining a comprehensive set of atomic elements, establishing a unified visual language with design tokens like colors and typography. This approach facilitated a smooth progression through molecules and organisms, ensuring each component's flexibility and reusability. Templates and pages were then constructed based on these modular components, demonstrating a holistic and scalable design system.

  • Atoms: Defined as the smallest UI elements, such as buttons and icons.
  • Molecules: Functional units created by combining atoms, promoting reusability.
  • Organisms: Larger components that represent meaningful sections of the UI.
  • Templates: Blueprints defining the overarching structure of a page.
  • Pages: Instances where templates are populated with real content.

Implementation and Benefits

The team's meticulous implementation of the design system based on Atomic Design principles resulted in a robust library of modular components. Design tokens facilitated a unified visual language, while the modular approach allowed for streamlined design processes and easier maintenance. The scalable nature of the system became evident as Cross Culture Kombucha expanded its online presence, enabling seamless integration of new features and sections. This strategic choice not only met the immediate needs of the project but also laid a foundation for future growth, ensuring a cohesive user experience regardless of the website's scale.

We transformed the captivating t-shirt illustrations of Cross Culture Kombucha into eye-catching bumper stickers. This transition allowed the brand's unique visuals to extend beyond apparel, becoming a mobile canvas that promotes the brand wherever it goes.

Our carefully crafted product cards at Cross Culture Kombucha, featuring a "Favorite" button and a streamlined "Add to Cart" option, significantly enhanced user interaction and boosted conversion rates. This user-friendly design streamlined the purchasing process, leading to a notable increase in successful transactions and contributing to the overall success of the project.

Celebrating the Wins and Challenges

Revammping Cross Culture Kombucha's online presence was not without its challenges, from aligning diverse stakeholder expectations to integrating a robust e-commerce platform seamlessly. However, these challenges were met with strategic solutions and a resilient team spirit. One notable win was the successful implementation of a scalable design system using Atomic Design principles. This approach not only addressed immediate design needs but also positioned the brand for sustained growth, ensuring a harmonious user experience as the website expands.

The reception from both retail and wholesale customers has been overwhelmingly positive. The intuitive user interface (UI) and streamlined checkout process have garnered praise for enhancing the overall online shopping experience. The incorporation of a comprehensive e-commerce solution, coupled with features like the store locator and dynamic forms for wholesale inquiries, has significantly elevated the brand's digital presence.

Thirsty for Growth

Moreover, the launch of this site directly impacted their growth - in 2022, they expanded into a larger facility in Danbury. This critical milestone marks their increased production capabilities and the adoption of a mobile canning business, underscoreing the brand's commitment to growth and innovation. As pioneers in Connecticut's burgeoning kombucha industry, the owners' dedication to experimenting with new flavors mirrors the company's spirit of resilience and adaptability.
